Senior Nick Barbaro and sophomore Brandon Mullen led Monsignor Farrell to a seventh-place team finish at the CHSAA New York State Intersectional Championship meet, held Saturday at the Carl D. Icahn Stadium on Randall’s Island.

Barbaro placed second in the 800-meter run, clocking one minute, 57.12 seconds, while Mullen placed second in the javelin with a 134 feet, three inch toss. Both efforts rank among the top 25 in New York State this tear.

Those two performances were part pf the 16 points scored by the Lions. Iona Prep was the team winner with 46, followed by Fordham Prep (38.5), Chaminade (36), St. Anthony’s (25), and Bishop Loughlin (24).

Mullen is only a sophomore, a multi-sport athlete who also plays football and basketball. His best is 137-3, but he was pleased with his competitive effort.

“I was close to my personal best with all my throws, " he said, adding, “it was fun to compete at this level of competition today.”

Barbaro hooked up in a duel with Xavier’s D’Angelo Brown, with Brown leading at the 400 mark in 58.89. Barbaro followed in 59.04, and seemed to be in an ideal position to make a big move.

He moved with 300 meters remaining, but as he said later, “I moved too early, and he just opened his stride up.”

Brown finished in 1:56.12, with the Sacred Heart-bound Barbaro turning in a personal best 1:57.12.

Barbaro added, “I have to tweak a few things. I have to keep closer earlier, and I have to make my move a little later.”

Farrell coach John Bentivegna was pleased with his team’s showing, saying, “We got some points from our distance people, and we got points and our throwers had a good day.”

Additional points in the throws came from junior Yasire DeJesus in the discus (4th, 129-9,) fifth in the shot put from Louis Martinez (44-1), and a fifth in the javelin from Matt Toomey (125-1).

Other Lion scorers included Michael Mason in the 1,600-meter run (4:31.23), and the 4x400-meter relay, which was fifth in 3:30.22.

St. Joseph by-the-Sea finished in a tie for 12th place with eight points. Six of the eight points came in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, with Joe Wilson, Dylan Doskocil, and Cody Doskocil going 3-4-5.

Wilson ran on the shoulder of St. Anthony’s star Aidan Brancaccio for much of the race before falling back to third in a personal-best 9:49.03, with Dylan Doskocil finishing in 9:58.97. Both performances rank among the top 50 in the USA this spring.

In fifth was soph Cody Doskocil, who ran 10:22.27.

Sea also received a fifth in the discus from soph Shane McAnuff, who threw 128-11, and Sea coach Chris Mancusi was enthusiastic about his fifth-place 4x400-meter relay team, composed entirely of sophomores.
