National Guard unit from Eastern Oregon honored for 2010-11 service in Iraq
ORCHARD, Idaho — The 3rd Battalion, 116th Cavalry Regiment of the Oregon Army National Guard received the Meritorious Unit Commendation on Wednesday, May 8, during their annual training at the Orchard Combat Training Center in Idaho for exceptional service during a 2010-2011 deployment to Iraq in support of Operation New Dawn.
Governor nominates Mark Bennett to state land conservation and development commission
Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek has nominated Mark Bennett of Baker County to serve on the Oregon Land Conservation and Development Commission. Bennett, who owns a cattle ranch near Unity, in southern Baker County, is a former county commissioner. He was appointed to fill a vacancy in 2013, then elected to four-year terms in 2014 and again in 2018. Prior to serving as a commissioner, Bennett worked for the county for more than two decades, serving in multiple jobs including planning director and emergency management director.

National Historic Oregon Trail Interpretive Center set to reopen May 24
BAKER CITY, Ore. — The National Historic Oregon Trail Interpretive Center (NHOTIC) is opening back up after years of being closed for renovations. Staff is planning on opening the doors up on Friday, May 24 at 1 p.m. for the public. After that, the NHOTIC is open seven days per week, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Baker County Weed District is offering free herbicide at several places in the county starting in May and continuing through the summer and into early fall. Money for the herbicide comes from the county’s property tax levy for noxious weed control.

Advocating for passenger trains: Baker City resident lends support to the cause
Matt Krabacher heard about the local effort to reinstate passenger rail service to Northeast Oregon, and he decided to lend his support — and time — to the cause. Baker City suspect faces charges after abandoning five dogs
BAKER COUNTY – (Release from the Baker County Sheriff’s Office) On May 2, 2024, the Baker County Sheriff’s Office was contacted by Dick Haines, with New Hope for Eastern Oregon Animals, who reported that three dogs were found in the area of Highway 7 and Forest Service Road 1040. Haines also stated that two dogs were still in the area and had not been captured.
