The wet season has arrived in NorCal. What to expect from skies over the next few days
As we swing into the cooler months of the year, get used to more days like Wednesday and Thursday, with scattered showers across California and cloudy skies. On Wednesday, an area of cooler low pressure — an extratropical cyclone — is spinning out off the coast of the Golden State. As it churns, it brings with it scattered rain showers moving out of the south Wednesday through Thursday across nearly the entire state. For Sacramento and Fresno, it will be the first good rain — not a trace amount — since late spring. Because of how the cyclone is maturing off the coast, many of these showers will stack up and “train” across thin bands, leaving some cities and towns with little rain and others with substantial amounts. Earlier Wednesday, a string of showers and thunderstorms dropped upwards of half an inch of rain between Clovis and Sanger while Fresno remained mostly dry. Into Wednesday afternoon, Fresno and the San Joaquin Valley were seeing lighter, more widespread showers take hold for several hours at a time. Another half in to inch of rain are expected across the southern San Joaquin Valley, and especially the Sierra foothills, through Thursday. Slightly lower

Recent Rain Doesn’t Lift Local Debris-Burning Suspension
Recent rain and cooler temperatures may make it feel like a good time to burn yard debris, but CAL FIRE’s Madera-Mariposa-Merced Unit is reminding residents that debris burning remains suspended. In an October 21 release, the agency cautioned that wetter weather can create a false sense of security. Rain...

Fresno gets first rain since early June as ‘wet season' begins with thunderstorms
The storms that began early Wednesday and slated to continue into Thursday officially mark the start of the wet season — a welcome change, as Fresno has gotten just over half of its usual amount of annual rainfall so far this year. As of early Wednesday afternoon, the Fresno Yosemite International Airport recorded 0.6 inches of rain, said McClatchy meteorologist Sean Macaday. Similar amounts were recorded in Sanger, and Clovis recorded around 0.2 inches. Through the rest of Wednesday afternoon and into early Thursday, Macaday says the area can expect another 0.5 inches of rain, though it could be as much as double that. The rain will be mainly concentrated to this afternoon and is expected to be more sparse Thursday. So far in 2026, Macaday says Fresno has gotten 57% of its usual annual rainfall levels. Because the rain year calendar just began on Oct. 1, Macaday clarified he looked at the 2026 calendar year. This storm marks a shift to the beginning of the area’s “wet season.” Before Wednesday, Fresno hadn’t officially recorded any rainfall since June 1.

High temps in Fresno to fall 20 degrees this week. What to expect in Central Valley and state
Despite chilly weekend mornings, the high temperature in Fresno is expected to touch 90 Saturday and then fall to 70 by Wednesday. The topsy-turvy weather and winds can be a calling card of mid-October. After a brief taste of cooler October temperatures, the Central Valley is in for one more warm stretch this weekend before a stronger cooldown moves into Northern California next week. Across the Central Valley from Sacramento to Fresno, skies will remain mostly clear this weekend as winds continue to flow out of the northeast offshore. It’s a great weekend to visit the ocean. Even the mountains, despite winds Friday gusting above 30 mph, won’t be half bad. Saturday especially looks nice for late-season hiking as winds begin to slow across the Sierra and with highs in the 60s and 70s. Sunday’s temperatures will taper ahead of the real cooldown next week. Highs will dip a few degrees into the low to mid-80s between Sacramento, Modesto and Fresno, with some gusty afternoon winds out of the south at 20 mph. This change in direction will mark the end of warm temps along the coast, so make those plans for Saturday if you can. Blast of cooler fall
