Meet the Fresno restaurant group behind trendy eateries Otherside, Heirloom and Saizon
If you’ve waited in line at Heirloom, snagged a honey-saffron latte at Otherside or caught the Instagram glow-up of Saizon, you’ve been eating your way through one restaurant group’s playbook — probably without realizing it. Now that group is growing again. Owners of Otherside Cafe confirmed this month that their second cafe will land at the corner of Palm and San Jose avenues, at the entrance to the Fig Garden Financial Center — just north of Fig Garden Village, behind Elbow Room and Chipotle. It’s taking over a freestanding former bank building most recently home to Guarantee Real Estate. Co-owner Rema Koligian said in an Instagram video that she expects it to open by the end of 2027. That new cafe is just the latest move from Brandon Smittcamp and partners Rema and Kevin Koligian — the trio (plus chef Justin Shannon at Heirloom and Saizon) are behind some of the buzziest places to eat in town. Here’s the full lineup. Otherside Cafe Opened in May 2025 at The Row at Heritage Grove, Otherside pairs a serious coffee program with an all-day food menu. Visalia breaks ground on first new park in 12 years
The community is invited to celebrate the groundbreaking of a new four-acre neighborhood park at 10 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 23 in southwest Visalia. The park will serve the surrounding community and help meet the recreational needs of the 225 new single-family homes planned for the area, city staff said. The park is located on the southwest corner of Roeben Street and Howard Avenue. It is the first city park to be constructed in the last decade. "We invite everyone to join us for this special occasion," Parks & Recreation Director Jason Glick said. "We're excited to begin construction on our first neighborhood park in 12 years. It will be a historic day." The new park is part of the city's ongoing efforts to implement the Visalia 2030 General Plan, which identified the development and maintenance of neighborhood parks as a community priority, city staff said. "The park's design was shaped through extensive community input. From the beginning, this project has been guided by Visalia residents," Glick said. "We held multiple public meetings to better understand the community's needs, and residents stepped up by providing feedback and voting on the amenities they wanted to see." California Barbecue Fans Pull Off Highway 99 In Tiny Traver For Real Texas-Style Brisket
Highway 99 runs straight through the heart of California farm country, and most drivers never slow down in Traver. That habit is starting to change. A small barbecue counter in this tiny Tulare County town has people from Texas, Alabama, and North Carolina claiming it holds its own against the barbecue they grew up on. The brisket comes with real bark, the menu has a bacon-wrapped surprise called the Texas Twinkie, and the doors close by mid-afternoon, so timing matters.
