Warrior wrap-up (5-14): Rice Lake golf records season-best score at Eau Claire Memorial meet

With a team score of 162, the Rice Lake boys golf team recorded its lowest total of the Big Rivers Conference season during Tuesday's meet hosted by Eau Claire Memorial at Mill Run Golf Course.

Rice Lake's score placed the Warriors sixth in the standings, and their total was three strokes better than their previous lowest score set at the meet April 25 at Turtleback in Rice Lake.

Ben Vande Voort led the Warriors in scoring a two over par 37 to tie for fifth with Hudson's Oscar Grothaus and New Richmond's Cole Langeness.

Brody Lammers and Dylan Husask each had their lowest scores of the season for Rice Lake in finishing with a 41 and 42, respectively. Max Tomesh matched Husak with a 42, and Kellen Marsh shot a 43.

Eau Claire Memorial topped the leaderboard at 145, two strokes in front of Hudson in second. Medalist winners were Hudson's Soren Knefelkamp and Eau Claire Memorial's Thomas Cole, who each shot 33s.

The eighth and final Big Rivers meet is the league tournament Thursday hosted by Menomonie at Whitetail Golf Course in Colfax. All 18 holes will be played, and points are worth double that of the other nine-hole meets. Rice Lake is currently in eighth in the conference. Eau Claire Memorial has a 5.5-point advantage over second-place Hudson as the Old Abes seek their fourth consecutive Big Rivers title.

In the season-long individual standings, the Warriors have two golfers in the top 25. With 26 points Vande Voort is currently 20th in the conference, and Marsh is tied for 21st with 25 points.

In a nonconference match Tuesday on Pug Lund Field it was the Oredockers netting the only goal of the game.

Nearing 19 minutes into the second half Ashland (13-2-1) found the back of the net. The Oredockers turned a long pass into scoring play as Cassidy Ludwig, from the other side of midfield, lofted the ball toward Ashland's offensive zone. Sienna Mika got behind the Rice Lake defense and took possession of the ball. She evaded Warrior goalkeeper Ayla Zuzek and had an open shot into the goal.

Zuzek had 10 saves. Ashland goalkeepers Maggie Tutor and Cadence Williams combined for three saves.

Rice Lake (7-5-5) returns to the field Thursday at home against Eau Claire North.

The Warriors will head into the postseason coming off two losses as the Raiders won in extra innings on a walk-off home run during Tuesday's game in Hudson.

A tied game at five runs apiece after seven innings, the game headed into extras. In the bottom of the eighth the Raiders (11-6, 9-5) got a two-run home run from Carly Meyer.

Rice Lake (13-10, 6-8) had taken a 5-3 lead after a three-run sixth, but Hudson evened the score in the bottom half of the inning.

Madi Rowe was 3 for 4 with an RBI and run scored, while Ava Anderson had two hits and two RBIs.

Anderson's two-run single in the fifth put Rice Lake in front 2-1. After falling behind by one, the Warriors had loaded the bases in the sixth with no outs. Hudson got the first two outs by strikeout, but Rowe delivered with a base knock to center and two additional runs scored on a Raider error.

The postseason is next for Rice Lake. The Warriors are the No. 1 seed in their Division 2 bracket and they open the playoffs Tuesday. The opponent will be determined Thursday in a regional quarterfinal between No. 8 Black River Falls and No. 9 Osceola.

Rice Lake finishes the season at 6-8 in the Big Rivers, and will either be tied for fifth or in sixth in the standings dependent on Eau Claire North's final game against Eau Claire Memorial on Thursday. New Richmond holds a one-game lead over Chippewa Falls for first place with one game left for both teams on Thursday. The Tigers play at Menomonie, and the Cardinals host River Falls.

    Hudson 11, Rice Lake 1

Four first-inning runs and six more in the second guided the Raiders past the Warriors on Tuesday in Hudson.

Five Rice Lake errors helped Hudson (13-7, 9-2) tally early runs as Warriors starting pitcher Kalvin Kelsey had five of the 10 runs scoring against him unearned.

Rice Lake's lone run came in the top of the first that had given the Warriors the 1-0 advantage. Easton Stone drew a two-out walk, and Lucas Roux followed that up with a double to left field. Stone scored on the hit as Roux moved to third on the throw. A fly out to left stranded the runner 90 feet from home.

The Warriors were held to three hits with Roux, Aaron Hoffman and Kelsey getting base knocks.

Rice Lake (6-12, 2-9) is back in action Thursday for its regular season home finale against Hudson. The regular season ends Monday with a doubleheader at New Richmond.
