Racing action is seen during the STIHL National Championship Air Races at Reno-Stead Airport on Sept. 18, 2021.

A new home is officially being sought for the National Championship Air Races, which have been held at Reno-Stead Airport for almost 60 years.

The Reno Air Racing Association put out a “request for proposals,” or RFP, to other airports and localities to see if they want to partner.

This year’s air races from Sept. 13 to 17 will be the final ones held in Reno.

The decision was confirmed with a unanimous vote by the Reno-Tahoe Airport Authorities’ board of trustees in March. The reason given in the board's agenda was "challenging economic conditions and the impact the races have on the airport and surrounding areas."

Air shows featuring aerobatic demonstrations are hosted many places around the world, but the National Championship Air Races appears to be the only event in the world where planes compete based on speed through race courses.

An air show will be held at Reno-Stead Airport in 2024 to celebrate what would've been the races’ 60th anniversary.

In seeking proposals, the Reno Air Racing Association says, “We are not only seeking to find a permanent home for our traditional 7-class race week, but also additional venues that may be interested in hosting perhaps fewer race classes in smaller, less complex events that will bring air racing to an expanded audience in multiple locations each year.”

It touts an economic impact each year that “regularly exceeds over $100 million” and that draws “tens of thousands of patrons from all over the world.”

The deadline to submit is Aug. 1.

“Our RFP selection committee is excited to get to work on this project and to see the possibilities for the event’s next home,” said Terry Matter, vice chairman for the Reno Air Racing Association board, in a statement.

“We have a talented group of 12 members made up of other RARA board members, race pilots, engineers, and consultants who have been chosen for their combined knowledge and familiarity with the detail and scope of what it takes to produce, manage, and market the National Championship Air Races. With their expertise, we feel confident we will select the best location for the event’s continued success.”
