Aspen Journalism is compiling a data dashboard highlighting metrics of local public interest, updated weekly. Snowpack in the Roaring Fork basin is dropping as temperatures are going up. Snowpack went from 16.4 inches of snow-water equivalent per site on April 14 to 14.8 inches on April 21, or 103% of median, according to NRCS.
The right time for rail service, Aspen to GWS
Regarding Annalise Grueter's astute guest commentary (“Trapped in the RFV’s Gridlock,” April 20, Aspen Daily News), I couldn't agree more. Thank you. My lucky commute to Aspen is a mere 3 miles from home. Weather allowing, I can walk to town at the brisk pace of about 4 mph. Sometimes I pass the same cars on foot more than once as they idle futilely to reach the mini-jam at the roundabout.

Krabloonik Dog Sledding owner Dan Phillips says the operation has found new homes for the large majority of its dogs. Phillips said adopters have come forward to take in all but 25 of Krabloonik’s dogs. Phillips said Krabloonik had around 150 dogs at the beginning of the winter season. He added that roughly 75 dogs are currently living on the property, 50 of which are set to be picked up by new owners sometime this spring.

Airborne survey indicates short runoff season
Aerial snow measurements in the Roaring Fork and Fryingpan watersheds indicate a short runoff season this year. A report from an airborne survey conducted on April 9 shows that snowpack in the upper reaches of both rivers is warmer and smaller than last year. The survey was conducted by Boulder-based Airborne Snow Observatories, a private company operating through contracts with local governments.

Soldner: Please limit Aspen airport size
Dear editor, Roaring Fork Valley residents, Pitkin County commissioners,. While following the back and forth about the Aspen airport question I keep wondering why no one is offering an obvious solution? I wish you, our dedicated and well intentioned Pitkin County commissioners whom I really respect, would do for the airport what you have done with housing size: Downsize! You recently limited the size of new house construction from 15,000 square feet to 9,250 square feet and possibly an even smaller size in the future.
Angled parking suits Basalt downtown fine
From The Aspen Times, July 28, 2022, regarding parallel parking in Aspen's downtown core: "City officials have been getting a steady stream of complaints in recent weeks about the removal of 44 angle parking spaces in that three-block vicinity, as well as the dedicated bike lane and parallel parking configuration."
Vidakovich column: There is no finish line for Bob Albright
Basalt resident Bob Albright says he continues to run at age 83 because he wants to stay thin and healthy. But listening more closely to the ageless wisdom in his soft spoken words, the telltale thought he gives initially is the one those in the fraternity of distance runners can most relate to.
