A 21-year-old man from the Bay Area entered a not guilty plea during his arraignment in Shasta County Thursday morning, according to the Shasta County District Attorney's Office.
Jacob Mandujano, of Redwood City, denied the allegations that he fatally stabbed his mother, 51-year-old Yose Elizabeth Barron-Alcazar, on May 23, 2023, on Lynda Lynn Way north of Redding.
Deputies with the Shasta County Sheriff's Office (SCSO) had responded to the home around 8 a.m. that day after deputies say Mandujano called dispatch to say he stabbed someone.
The district attorney's office says criminal proceedings were suspended so Mandujano's attorney can determine if he is competent to stand trial.
Mandujano is expected back in court on July 12 for a report from a court-appointed doctor to evaluate his mental competency.
