BASEBALL ROUNDUP: NN tops SN, claims share of Big East season title

Northern Nash’s baseball team claimed a share of the Big East 2A/3A Conference regular-season title by outlasting rival Southern Nash 13-8 in the season finale at home Thursday night in Red Oak.

The Knights (9-3 conference, 12-7 overall) have won four in a row going into next week’s conference tournament. They tied Bunn (also 9-3 in the league and 14-6 overall), who beat Roanoke Rapids 8-3 on Thursday.

Southern Nash ended the regular season 4-8 in conference play and 8-14 overall and will be the No. 6 seed for the conference tournament.

Every time the Firebirds gained some momentum, the Knights had a big response.

Southern took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning but Northern came right back with three runs in the bottom half of the frame to take the lead as Brady Jenkins had a three-run double that plated Landon Keefe, Andrew Zipko and Clay.

The Knights added five runs in the bottom of the fourth for an 8-2 lead, but the Firebirds rallied with two runs of their own on a home run by Keegan Wallace and an RBI single by Isaiah Battle in the top of the fifth. The home team responded with five more runs in the bottom of the fifth for a 13-4 advantage.

Southern made the final result closer with a four-run sixth frame.

Each team finished with nine hits but the Firebirds left nine runners on base compared with six for the Knights.

Brady Jenkins led NN with three hits (two doubles) and five RBI, while Peyton Clay added two hits (one a double) with five RBI. Providing one hit each were Chason Boseman (RBI), Marquis Nicholson, Logan Denton and Dominick Robbins. Tristan Murray and Landon Keefe also drove in runs.

Murray earned the win for NN as he pitched 5.1 innings and allowed six hits and six runs (five earned) with three walks and six strikeouts. Robbins went 1.2 frames in relief and gave up three hits and two earned runs with two walks and two strikeouts.

Blake Strickland and Isaiah Battle each had two hits for Southern Nash. Wallace (two RBI), Luke Faulkner (RBI), Maddox Deans (double), Brennan Pridgen and Jeremiah Battle added one hit each.

Faulkner (3.2 innings, one hit, seven earned runs, seven walks, one strikeout), Wallace (1.0 frames, seven hits, six earned runs, two walks, two strikeouts) and Landon Brown (1.1 innings, one hit, one walk) pitched for the Firebirds.

Franklinton 8 Rocky Mount 2

Rocky Mount ended its regular season 0-12 in the Big East 2A/3A Conference and 0-17 overall after falling to the Red Rams in the regular-season finale at home on Thursday night.

The Gryphons outhit Franklinton 6-5 as Christian Buck (triple, RBI), Jack McKellar (two doubles) and Tyson Lynch (RBI) had two hits each.

Buck (five innings, five hits, six runs (two earned runs), four strikeouts) and McKellar (two innings, two earned runs, six walks, five strikeouts) pitched for the Gryphons.

FCS 3, Harrells 0

Faith Christian outhit Harrells 7-3 on its way to a Carolina Independent Conference victory at home on Thursday night.

The Patriots improved to 4-3 in the conference and 11-6 overall. Harrells fell to 4-3 in league play and 8-8 overall.

Vince Wilson (double) and Tanner Trevathan (RBI) had two hits each for FCS, while Garrett Lewis, Dylan Morgan and Carter Boswell (RBI) collected one hit each.

Ayden Tyndall picked up the win on the mound as he went seven innings and allowed only three hits and no runs with 11 strikeouts and three walks.

Martin 12, Tarboro 1

Tarboro dropped to 4-5 in the Four Rivers 1A Conference and 9-10 overall following a league loss to Martin County at Municipal Stadium in Tarboro on Thursday night.

The Vikings, who scored their only run in the first inning, finished with eight hits: two from Gabe Kassnove and Mason Satterfield and one each from Cole Craddock (RBI), Isaiah Jones, Stephen Ribustello and Landon Browning.

Ribustello (three innings, six hits, three earned runs, one strikeout, one walk), Browning (1.1 innings, two hits, two earned runs, two walks) and Craddock (1.2 innings, two hits, five earned runs, six walks, three strikeouts) pitched for Tarboro.

NWH 7 North Edgecombe 2

North Edgecombe dropped to 2-9-1 in the Tar Roanoke 1A Conference and 2-13-1 overall after a conference loss at home to Northwest Halifax on Thursday.

NWH improved to 7-3 in league play and 7-3 overall.
