High winds fuel weekend field fire
A fire that broke out during corn harvest over the weekend spread quickly through a field just north of Highway 34, a little more than a mile west of Interstate 29. According to Colman Fire Chief Jason Landis, the fire appears to have started when a combine’s corn head struck a rock, creating a spark. Strong winds fueled the flames, sending thick smoke into the air that could be seen for miles. Although the combine initially appeared to catch fire, it escaped damage. Crews from the Colman and Flandreau fire departments, along with Flandreau Ambulance, responded, bringing the blaze under control by mid-afternoon. Field fires are a recurring concern during fall harvest, especially in dry and windy conditions. Landis encourages farmers to have tractors hooked up to disks and ready to assist firefighters if needed. Disking around a fire can help create a break in the crop residue and slow the spread of flames.
