4,500 Nevadans told to find new doctors by Kaiser | Exclusive
For Cynthia Richardson, 2026 was all about celebrating a marriage that’s still going strong after six decades. Just before the Reno resident and her husband were set to leave for a 60th anniversary trip to Italy’s Amalfi Coast, however, Richardson was notified by her insurance provider that she had six weeks to find a new doctor. “I was astonished and frustrated,” Richardson, 79, said. “I had my yearly physical set for the third week in September. That’s canceled now.” Richardson is not alone. Patients and doctors in Northern Nevada are crying foul over a sudden insurance change that is forcing thousands to find new doctors in the middle of a plan year — just months after Kaiser Permanente and Renown Health signed a joint venture that was promoted as expanding access to care. Kaiser Permanente Nevada notified more than 4,500 members of the rebranded Hometown Health insurance plan that their doctors were being dropped from its network’s list of approved physicians effective Aug. 29. The notice informed patients that they would need to switch to a new doctor within Kaiser’s approved network. The change is limited to Health Maintenance Organization, or HMO, plans such as Senior Care Plus. It does

Rampart operates 24 hours a day and is staffed by emergency medicine physicians. The facility has X-ray and ultrasound capabilities, a pharmacy and a laboratory. Most patients were treated for common emergency department complaints, including musculoskeletal injuries, soft tissue injuries and urinary tract infections, Hassan said. Saint Mary’s nurses in Reno to join 1-day strike across 3 states
Nurses at Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center will be joining a one-day strike held by fellow union members across three states over patient safety and fair contracts. Registered nurses at Saint Mary’s in Reno plan to go on strike from 6:45 a.m., Sept. 3, to 6:44 a.m., Sept. 4, according to the National Nurses United union. Saint Mary’s is one of four hospitals owned by Prime Healthcare where union members plan to go on strike. The other hospitals are West Anaheim Medical Center in Anaheim, California; Shasta Regional Medical Center in Redding, California; and Saint Mary of Nazareth Hospital in Chicago. The striking nurses gave their 10-day notice for the strike on Monday, Aug. 24. An estimated 2,200 nurses are covered by the strike. The union nurses from the Nevada and California hospitals have been working without a contract from parent company Prime Healthcare since last year. The lack of a contract is making it tough to recruit and retain while also adversely impacting patient care, according to the union. “Nurses have become overwhelmed with the number of patients we are assigned, to the point where we cannot safely assess or attend to all of the patients’ needs,” said Vanessa
