Motorcyclist dies at X Games freestyle motocross track in East County

RAMONA, Calif. — Authorities on Tuesday are investigating a motorcyclist’s death at an X Games freestyle motocross track in Ramona, law enforcement said.

The incident occurred around 2:45 p.m. off Sutherland Dam Road at Slayground Motocross Park, Lt. Daniel Vengler with the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department said in a news release.

According to authorities, the biker crashed his motorcycle while performing a jump on the park ramps. First responders performed life-saving measures on the victim who was later pronounced dead at 3:42 p.m., Cal Fire San Diego said.

The identity of the victim has not been released, but the sheriff’s department confirmed the deceased as a 29-year-old man. More information is expected to be released from the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office, per the sheriff’s department.

On Tuesday, SkyFOX was over the scene of the accident at the freestyle motocross track, which is owned by Axell Hodges, a three-time gold medal winner in X Games Moto X competition.

In January of 2020, Hodges, an Encinitas resident, spoke to FOX 5 about his 40-acre piece of property. The “Slayground” was also the site of the X Games Moto X competitions in 2021 and 2022.
