RAHWAY, NJ — If you want to have a successful high school sports program, you have to cultivate talent, enthusiasm, and dedication long before a young athlete walks through the doors as a wide-eyed freshman. This is precisely what Coaches Ashanti Ehrhart, a teacher at Rahway High School, and Erik Lister, who teaches at the Academy, have been up to this year, starting up a middle school track team at the 7th and 8th Grade Academy.

TAPinto Rahway made its way to the meet over at Williams Field in Elizabeth this past Thursday to see Rahway and 15 other middle school track programs run, throw, and jump.

Coach Ehrhart shared her excitement with us over the team's first really big meet but admitted that it was, at least initially, a bit overwhelming for athletes and coaches alike.

"We've competed this season already," she said, "but those were dual meets that were just us and one other team. There are 16 teams here today, so it was definitely something we had to adjust to when we first got here."

But adjust they did. Ehrhart went on to tell us how proud she was of everyone's performance and how much she was looking forward to the season ahead.

"The kids came out and gave it their all. This was a brand-new experience for everyone, so it was a lot for them to take in at first, but they had a great time in the end. We are all looking forward to the next championship meet where we will face off with these teams again," she said.

The team's top performance of the day was a 5th place finish in the 800 sprint medley relay run by Elijah Derilus, David Kalu, Jasean Rickenbacker, and Aiden Myers.

Congratulations to the team on a great performance. TAPinto Rahway looks forward to covering more of your accomplishments soon.
