A fragrance tenant left Southpoint. Why the Durham mall says it's owed over $620K
The Streets at Southpoint mall is suing a former tenant for unpaid rent and other claims, according to a complaint filed Monday in Durham County Superior Court. General Growth Properties (GGP), the shopping center’s landlord, alleges that Aroma360 Southpoint NC LLC owes over $623,000 in accrued and projected rent damages. The company operated Aroma360 Luxury Scenting store. The complaint says the tenant failed to pay rent and other charges and never paid the required $30,000 security deposit. The complaint also alleges $39,982 was owed through Sept. 30 and says Aroma360 LLC guaranteed the tenant’s lease obligations. GGP is asking Durham County Superior Court to hold Aroma360 and Aroma360 LLC jointly responsible for the unpaid money. The complaint says a separate eviction case resulted in a Sept. 14 possession judgment, and the tenant left the mall around Sept. 30. The lease covered about 1,760 square feet, with base rent starting at $6,600 a month and scheduled to increase to $7,428 in 2030, when the lease ended. A spokesperson for GGP told The News & Observer that they could not comment on the pending complaint and don’t comment on tenant relations. The N&O has also reached out to Aroma360 for comment on

Raleigh says housing, transportation bonds on ballot won't increase taxes. Is that true?
Raleigh wants voters to pass two bonds this election year totaling $203 million to fund transportation improvements and affordable housing. And the city has a convincing pitch: Unlike previous bonds, there would be no extra tax increase associated with these bonds. But that raises a question: If Raleigh isn’t asking voters to pay more in taxes to support the bonds, then how would the city be paying for them? The short answer is that taxpayers would still be paying — just in a different way. The long answer first requires knowledge of what a bond is, and why local governments have to ask voters to approve them. Alongside the bonds, there are 15 candidates for Raleigh City Council and the mayor on the ballot for the Nov. 3 election. In-person early voting runs from Oct. 15-31. What is a bond? When local governments place a bond on the ballot, they’re essentially asking voters for permission to borrow money. There are several kinds of bonds that a local government can ask voters to approve, according to the National Association of Bond Lawyers. Some require a local government to raise property owners’ taxes directly to back the loan. In this case, Raleigh
