Radnor police, firefighters asking community to help in donating blood in battle of the badges

RADNOR – Radnor’s first responders are hosting the third annual Battle of the Badges blood drive between the police and fire departments, and they are asking residents to get involved.

The event is a competition to see which department can recruit the most community members to donate blood for the American Red Cross.

Radnor Fire Chief Joseph Maguire and Radnor Police Chief Christopher Flanagan spoke in a video promoting this year’s blood drive.

“Chief Flanagan and I want to challenge you to a battle of the badges,” Maguire said. “We have accepted the American Red Cross challenge of helping save lives, and I would like to invite you to join your fellow firefighters, police officers and other emergency personnel by donating blood during the Radnor Township Battle of the Badges campaign.”

The two departments are competing in the Battle of the Badges to see who can recruit the most eligible blood donors. The community is encouraged to give blood on Thursday, June 22, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Sulpizio Gym, 125 South Wayne Ave. in Wayne.

“Battle of the badges builds camaraderie amongst local first responders through a friendly competition to see who can collect the most units of blood,” Flanagan said. “It’s a great way for friends, family, other emergency personnel, and most importantly, the Radnor community to come together to donate blood and help save lives with the Red Cross.”

Anyone wanting to participate can make an appointment, or to learn more, download the American Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit redcrossblood.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767). Completing a RapidPass online health history questionnaire found at redcrossblood.org/rapidpass is encouraged to help speed up the donation process.

A blood donor card, driver’s license, or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals 17 years of age in most states (16 with parental consent where allowed by state law), weigh at least 110 pounds, and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger must also meet certain height and weight requirements.
