High-end sales helping drive Redding area, California housing market
Mirroring a trend across California, the high end of Shasta County’s real estate market has been strong in 2026. As the first half of the year approaches, home sales are up. What’s more, pending sales are trending up. Pending sales, or homes that are in contract, are typically an indicator of future sales. “So that tells us for the month of June, we’re going to see some good closings for the month and probably setting us up for a decent July as well,” Redding real estate broker Josh Barker said during his June market update on his YouTube channel. Brad Garbutt, a broker associate with Northstate Real Estate Professionals, said in a June 4 email to the Record Searchlight, there were 397 sales pending, a 29% jump from the 281 homes that were in contract a year ago. High-end, entry-level market driving sales Sales for homes in Shasta County priced at or above $900,000 through May more than doubled from a year ago, from 13 to 28, Barker said. I think what is going on is the cost of construction is not going down. So some of the best value is actually in the resale market and not in new

Redding's new online tool helps homeowners check permits
Homeowners in Redding can verify that the correct permits have been pulled for home improvement projects using a new online system launched by the city. The city announced it introduced a digital permitting platform designed to streamline the permitting process and help residents ensure their investments are protected The new system allows homeowners to check the status of building permits for projects such as HVAC replacements, water heater installations, roofing and other projects, the announcement said. Contractors can apply for permits online, and residents can track progress to ensure work is being done safely and legally. “We work with many excellent contractors in our community who take pride in doing things the right way,” Jeremy Pagan, Director of Development Services, said in the announcement. “But, if you’ve hired a contractor and want to verify the proper permits have been obtained, we’ve made it simple to look up this information yourself to ensure the investment you’ve made in your home is protected.” Building permits are required by law and serve as a safety net to protect homeowners from substandard work, the city said. Skipping the permit process violates the California Building Code and can expose homeowners to risks such as health

Layoffs to hit cement plant north of Redding in June
A large manufacturer north of Redding will be cutting its workforce later this year. CalPortland Cement in Mountain Gate plans to lay off 53 employees effective June 15, Tina McIntyre, the company's vice president of public affairs, said on Monday, April 13. The cement plant is one of two firms with locations in the North State that recently announced layoffs. In a news release, Summerlin, Nevada–based CalPortland said the layoffs are temporary and are being driven by a decline in cement demand in Northern California. The workforce reduction also is specific to Redding as there are no other layoffs expected at its other plants. CalPortland produces cement, ready mixed concrete, aggregates, concrete products and asphalt in the western United States and Canada. “CalPortland will continue to monitor market conditions closely and will reassess staffing needs as demand changes. The Company remains confident in the long-term strength of its operations and its ability to respond effectively as the Northern California market recovers,” the news release said. McIntyre also said the cost of doing business in California is a factor. “I don’t think we are along in that area, but market conditions are just at a state where we had to reassess

Meg Whitman Quietly Puts 1,500-Acre Trout Ranch Near Redding Up for Grabs
Meg Whitman is looking to part ways with Spring Creek Ranch, a 1,500-acre trophy spread in the Fall River Valley north of Redding, quietly listing the property for $18.5 million. The pitch leans hard on its private trout fishery, more than a mile of Fall River frontage, and spring-fed creeks that the listing says grow trophy rainbow trout. It is a glimpse into the kind of remote, recreation-heavy ranch that attracts buyers willing to pay a premium for reliable water and serious angling.

What's being built at Shasta and Market in Redding?
Work started nearly two years ago on a mixed-use development at the corner of Shasta and Market streets in downtown Redding. The Rib Cage will feature Odell Craft Barbecue , which will move from its current spot just south on Market Street to the development. Odell’s expansion will feature its popular menu of smoked meats, sides, a cocktail bar and patio dining. Right next to Odell will be 12 market-rate one-bedroom, one-bath apartments. K2 Development, which also built Market Center and Redding Public Market, is the Rib Cage developer. Word is this new addition to downtown will open sometime in the second half of 2026. Final Draft eyes second location. Buffalo Wild Wings opening soon
Adam Ward of Final Draft Brewing sees opportunity in Palo Cedro. That’s why Ward picked the Palo Cedro Shopping Center on Deschutes Road to open a second Final Draft location. I spoke briefly to Ward recently while he was at the shopping center visiting his new location. His goal is to open in late summer or early fall. Final Draft will be in the former Norm’s spot, the restaurant that closed last year. It will mark the return of a local brewery to the shopping center. California Brewing operated there for two years before it closed in 2016. Final Draft was established nearly 10 years ago on California Street in downtown Redding, where it also has a restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating. The business has built a loyal following and that Ward wants to bring to Palo Cedro. “We want to bring more traffic to downtown Palo Cedro,” Ward said. While they won’t brew beer in Palo Cedro, Ward said the tap room will offer the same menu and beers on tap that are featured at Final Draft’s downtown location. Ironically, Redding commercial real estate broker Ken Miller, who brokered the lease for Final Draft in Palo Cedro, also
