PRYOR, Okla. - Pryor Middle School student, Ally Martin tied for 1st place at the Eastern Oklahoma State Spelling Bee held at the Muskogee Civic Center in April. After qualifying at the local level, she joined 191 other hopefuls to compete for the title. Ally went a record thirty-three rounds before the head judge declared the spelling bee a tie for the first time in the history of the bee. The other winner, Ethan Yosef, attends St. Joseph Middle School in Muskogee.
While other Pryor students have competed and placed in the spelling bee over the last thirteen years, this is the first time a Pryor student has taken home the 1st place trophy and winnings.
Ally says she studied ten hours a week leading up the competion. A few words she spelled correctly in her thirty-three rounds were tortuosity, hydraulic, schnauzer, and shrapnel.
The Eastern Oklahoma State Spelling Bee awarded Martin a scholarship of $375. An additional scholarship of $150 was presented by the Cruis'n Angels Car Club in Muskogee. The victory also earned Pryor Schools a check for $750.
On May 22, the Director of the Spelling Bee, Susan E. Hoog, presented Ally and her principal, Mr. Matheson, with her winnings. Ally donated her trophy to the school.
