In February, the country celebrated National Cancer Prevention Month and American Heart Month to bring awareness to the leading causes of death for Americans. These illnesses are preventable and easily treated when detected early on through regular screenings, which will be offered for free at the Wellness Clinic’s Spring Health Fair on Tuesday and Wednesday from 8:30-11:30 a.m.

The fair will be held at 151 S. University Ave., suites 1600 and 1709, in Provo and is sponsored by the Utah County Health Department. Free services that don’t require an appointment include tests and screenings for vision, kidney function, skin cancer, blood pressure and fasting glucose.

These tests will be offered by outside organizations. For those who are unable to attend the event, the Wellness Clinic can assist with contacting these organizations at their regular locations.

For those who qualify, free mammograms, pap smears, breast exams, cervical screenings and cholesterol tests are available by appointment for women ages 40-64 during the fair and regular hours. Appointments are first come, first serve and are able to be made by calling the Wellness Clinic at 801-851-7031 or 801-851-7092.

For early detection, mammogram tests should be conducted yearly and pap smears should be done every five years for women in this age range. Women not in this age range who are in need of testing can call the Wellness Center for exceptions that can be made under certain conditions.

“In Utah, our mammography screening rates are among the lowest in the nation. The Utah County Health Department is working to increase awareness of the benefits of early detection by providing free mammogram vouchers so that women can get this vital screening done without worrying about cost,” said Laura Nelson of the UCHD.

Organizations such as Centro Hispano, Alzheimer’s Association, Huntsman Cancer Institute, Mountainlands Health Center and Relay Utah will be at the event to help provide resources and education on cancer and heart disease in English and Spanish. There will also be massages, manicures, refreshments and prizes for those in attendance.
