PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — A former Hasbro Children’s Hospital employee was in court Thursday on a video voyeurism charge, and police are now investigating whether this was the first time he committed the alleged crime.

Police say 47-year-old Jason E. Baker is accused of putting a hidden camera inside a staff bathroom at the hospital. He was arrested Tuesday after an employee discovered a USB charger plugged into the wall with the camera attached.

According to police, Baker admitted to installing the camera when he was later questioned.

It’s unclear how long the device was plugged in. Police said they conducted a sweep of the facility and found no additional cameras. However, police also told 12 News they obtained a search warrant for items at Baker’s home and said they’re “investigating the possibility of Baker doing this previously at the hospital.”

Providence Police Chief Oscar Perez said Baker could face further charges, depending on their findings.

“It’s pretty active. They’ve been working at it,” Perez said. “It could be months of videos, and maybe not, but we want to make sure that whatever it is, we look into it thoroughly to make sure that we identify victims if needed, and if there are any other counts, we’re going to make sure that is done.”

A hospital spokesperson said the bathroom where the camera was found was inaccessible to patients and other members of the public.

Baker has since been fired and no longer has access to the hospital or its affiliated facilities.

He was arraigned Thursday and pleaded not guilty to the felony charge. His bail was set at $10,000 personal recognizance and he was issued a non-domestic no-contact order.

Baker was also ordered to undergo pretrial supervision. He’s due back in court on June 27.

Frank Sims, R.N., president of United Nurses and Allied Professionals (UNAP) Rhode Island Hospital Local 5098, released a statement Thursday saying the union is “shocked and saddened by this despicable incident.”

“We are pleased to learn that the perpetrator has been fired and held accountable for his actions,” he continued. “The safety and security of the members of our union and all hospital employees is paramount for us. We will continue to fight for policies that ensure all nurses and health care professionals are safe and protected in an already difficult work environment.”

12 News has learned that Baker managed the Rhode Island Association of the U.S. Bowling Congress (RI USBC). The RI USBC board voted Thursday to remove him from that position, effective immediately.
