Providence carnival ordered to shut down following large fight involving teenagers

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — A carnival in Providence was forced to shut down after a large fight broke out over the weekend.

According to a police report obtained by ABC 6 News, officers were called to a disturbance at a popular carnival at the George J. West Park Saturday.

The brawl started just after 7 p.m. in the area of Roanoke and Leah streets. Officers working the carnival reported that they saw a crowd of people run up to a car and start fighting with two people who got out of it.

Several people were arrested, but only Maliki Chester and Desmond Brown, both 18, were named in the police report. The majority of those accused of having a part in the brawl are juveniles.

Officers reported they called for assistance from surrounding police agencies to help get the situation under control and had to detain people as the fight escalated.

The report alleges Chester and Brown refused to leave the area when told to by police.

Officers said in the report the two were “yelling and screaming in an attempt to provoke police and further inciting the disturbance” after seeing some of their friends being detained.

They were both arrested and charged with disorderly conduct and obstruction.

Brown faces an additional charge for resisting arrest.

Chester and Brown are set to be arraigned Wednesday, according to online court records.

Police ordered a representative to shut the carnival down.

ABC 6 reached out to city officials and the company that runs the carnival for comment and have yet to hear back.
