SCIOTO COUNTY, Ohio — Shawnee State University’s Honors Program is taking a unique approach to learning by providing students with personalized and in-depth academic experiences. The program, designed to cater to the individual interests of each student, allows participants to explore diverse academic topics, while working closely with Honors professors.
In addition to conducting their own research, students enrolled in the Honors Program get to socialize with other Honors students, gain priority course registration, live in designated Honors housing, and receive assistance with internship placement and study abroad opportunities.
According to SSU Director of the Honors Program, Pablo Salinas, the program also provides students with experiential learning opportunities. “A student can take an Honors Conference and later use experiential learning funds to practice the knowledge they acquired during the conference,” he said. “This semester three Honors students are applying to go to Latin America to fulfill their experiential learning component.”
Enrolled students who are interested in applying for the Honors Program can receive up to $1,000 to offset the cost of their experiential learning, but they can also apply for fully-funded trips.
The Honors Program is open to incoming freshmen every fall semester, and students who are currently in their first or second semester at SSU are also eligible to apply. Applications should be completed by Apr. 1 for a fall entry or by Nov. 1 for spring consideration.
