Seismologists at the United States Geologic Survey said the quake was centered under the west side of the mountain, north of Timberline Lodge just about a mile under the surface.
Scientists at the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network at the University of Washington say they are reviewing data and would not be surprised to see aftershocks in the same area.
"The Cascades are one of the most active volcanic chains on the planet. It's part of the 'Ring of Fire.' A 3.0 magnitude earthquake is not unusual for Mt. Hood or the Cascades," KATU Meteorologist Dave Salesky says.
There have been no reports of damage.
