A 37-year-old man pleaded guilty Monday to charges that he tried to shoot and kill police officers during a traffic stop in May of last year, according to the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office.
On May 6, 2022, police pulled Matthew Leahey over near Northeast 78th Avenue and Mason Street just before 9:15 p.m.
The DA’s office said that after officers determined Leahey gave them information that wasn’t true and refused to hand over a driver’s license, Leahey pulled a gun and shot at one of the officers, just missing the officer’s head.
The DA’s office said Leahey tried to shoot a second officer, but police opened fire, critically wounding Leahey.
Leahey pleaded guilty to two counts of attempted aggravated murder, one count of unlawful use of a weapon with a firearm and one count of felon in possession of a firearm.
A judge is scheduled to sentence him June 8.
