‘Wow, this is crazy’: 4 adults shot in NE Portland

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Evidence markers were scattered on the streets of a Northeast Portland neighborhood Saturday afternoon after 4 adults were shot, sending them to the hospital.

The shooting happened around 5 p.m. in the area of NE Sumner and 55th. Portland police told KOIN 6 News two of the wounded people were taken by ambulance and two more went to the hospital by private vehicle. All are expected to survive.

Rory Henderson said her entire family heard the gunfire from their home just a few houses away from where the shots rang out.

“I got up and I came outside, and I saw all the tape, the cop cars, there was a firetruck earlier, an ambulance,” she told KOIN 6 News. “100 rounds were on the ground, and I was like, ‘Wow, this is crazy!’”

Another neighbor, Jim, lives around the corner. He said one of the victims ran frantically through his yard before getting medical help.

“I heard somebody yelling outside my window, and police pulled up in front of my house. And the kid yelled, ‘I’ve been shot,'” Jim said. “And he walked out and they checked him over, they didn’t cuff him. He didn’t seem to be hurt badly. An ambulance eventually came and took him away.”

Officers from Portland’s North Precinct were at the scene along with the specialized resources division, including the Focused Intervention Team.

PPB Capt. Jake Jensen said investigators would be at the scene “for a while processing to see what happened… because we want to hold the person or people that causes harm to the community accountable for their actions.”

Authorities said no suspects have been apprehended but also said they don’t believe there’s an ongoing threat to the public. But neighbors said this incident has left them shaken.

“It’s really crazy and really scary because in high school, I learned about gun violence and it’s just crazy to think that it actually is happening in my city, on my own street, that I live on,” Henderson said. “And just the safety of it all is crazy. I walk home from school down that way and it’s yesterday, it wasn’t like that. And today it is.”
