Feeling a bit warm? Well, unlike on most days of this month when we would suggest you check your temperature and head to bed because you have most likely caught yet another spring bug, today you may be warm because it’s actually warm outside.
It is so warm, in fact, that Portland has already, unofficially, beaten the daily record for April 28.
The record is as of yet unofficial, said David Bishop, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Portland, because we have yet to reach the hottest part of the day and, of course, the day isn’t over.
“At the moment, yes, we are above the current record,” Bishop said Friday. “The record for Portland is 82 and that was set in 1998.”
We may not be done yet with records, either. If Portland hits 90 today, we would tie the record for warmest day in April, also set in 1998, and it would be the earliest in the year that we’ve ever had a 90-degree day, since the other record was set on April 30.
“The hottest time of day during this time of year is within the next couple hours, from like 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.,” Bishop said, adding, “90 is definitely within the realm of possibility.”
It would also be a kind of hat trick if we reached 90 degrees on Friday, since Wednesday was the first day Portland hit 70 degrees and Thursday was the first day Portland hit 80 degrees.
However, said Bishop, an easterly wind is keeping the area relatively cool, which might stop 2023 from being the year for such a weird and warm feat.
If 90 is going to happen this April, it will need to happen today. Tomorrow’s high is expected to be in the low 80s. After that, and going into midweek, the highs will come back down to the low to mid-60s again.
