Community members are pushing back against a proposed Safe Rest Village site planned for Northwest Naito Parkway.
Portland City Commissioner Dan Ryan announced the location, along with five other sites in 2021. The Naito Parkway site would house up to 60 people, and provide amenities such as showers, restrooms and food.
The organization “Neighbors 4 Safe Smart Shelters” said the site is already harming the community, and it's not even open yet.
“It just cannot take it on for several reasons, one being the population density, we have the safety issues, we have the contamination issues," said Adam Bult of Neighbors 4 Safe Smart Shelters.
In a letter to the city, a lawyer for the group says he will take any legal action available to keep the site from moving forward.
There are two Safe Rest Villages currently operating in Portland. One solely for RVs is slated to open soon.
KATU reached out to the city for comment, and we have not yet heard back.
