Last week, Portland City Council heard testimony on a proposal that would ban daytime camping from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on public property and impose stricter rules on camping during all hours. More than a 100 city residents shared their thoughts and concerns with commissioners. The council will vote on the ordinance on Wednesday, June 7. Katie O’Brien is the executive director of Rose Haven, Portland’s only daytime shelter serving women, children and gender diverse Portlanders. Sandra Comstock is the executive director of Hygiene4All, a nonprofit providing showers, laundry service, first aid and other services to people experiencing homelessness in the city. They both join us to share their thoughts on the proposal and the potential impact it would have if passed.

McKelvey is the head of community and family programs for Self Enhancement Inc., a North Portland nonprofit that works with Black youth and their families. He oversees programs that offer shelter and other supports to people experiencing homelessness and provide rental assistance to people at risk of homelessness. But because of staffing shortages at SEI, McKelvey said he’s increasingly forced to say “no” to families seeking help.

Nurses and clinicians who work for Providence Health in Portland and Seaside authorized plans over the weekend to move forward with a strike. Around 1,800 health care workers completed voting for three separate strikes on Sunday. In a statement, the health care workers’ union said the votes for all three strikes were “near unanimous,” though the organization did not release specifics.

Officials have identified a man shot and killed by police officers in Vancouver on May 30 outside a grocery store. The Clark County Medical Examiner’s Office said on Monday that Joshua James Wilson, 43, died from multiple gunshot wounds in a parking lot. Police said at the time he was a suspect in multiple armed robberies and he fired on officers before he was killed.

Ada Limón is the author of six books of poetry, including “The Carrying,” which won the National Book Critics Circle Award for Poetry. Her book “Bright Dead Things” was nominated for the National Book Award, the National Book Critics Circle Award, and the Kingsley Tufts Poetry Award. Her work has been supported most recently by a Guggenheim Fellowship. She was the host of the critically-acclaimed poetry podcast, “The Slowdown.” She grew up in Sonoma, California and now lives in Lexington, Kentucky where she writes and teaches remotely. Her new book of poetry, “The Hurting Kind,” is out now from Milkweed Editions. She is the 24th Poet Laureate of The United States.
