People all across the country are remembering legendary drag queen Walter Cole, better known as Darcelle.
Darcelle passed away Thursday at the age of 92.
Her club downtown had two shows tonight in honor of her, packed with friends and fans. "We don't mourn. We celebrate our dear friend!" said drag queens at Darcelle's club.
And that's exactly what friends and fans packed Darcelle's club tonight to do.
"This is what she wanted. is our show to continue," said Mr. Mitchell. "We're not stopping. And as long as her name is on the door, we're not closing that door.
Those who knew her said she was an amazing soul.
"She taught all of us a lesson in life and she taught us a lesson in death that it can be a beautiful thing," said Dave Behrend. "And because of her, she made it a very beautiful thing. We're going to miss her a lot."
In 1967, Cole bought a club in Old Town and at that time, it was considered a rough part of town. "When she started 56 years ago, nobody came down here," said Mr. Mitchell. "And what really supported her was the lesbian community."
Today, the club is on the national register of historic places.
It is the first LGBTQIA+ establishment in Oregon to earn that designation.
In 2018, she earned the Guinness Book World Record for the oldest working drag queen.
"To live to be like, what, 92 years old. Holy cow," said Elisabeth Cooper.
"I'll see you on the other side," said Behrend. "Darcel, thanks for the memories."
There will be two more shows Saturday night and a drag brunch on Sunday.
A public memorial will be held for Darcelle, but the time and location are yet to be determined.
