Portland Fire & Rescue responded to a fire under the east side of the Broadway Bridge on Thursday morning.

Firefighters say a homeless encampment caught fire under Interstate Avenue on the approach to the bridge.

The fire jumped to grass and brush nearby.

Firefighters say they had a hard time putting it out because of fencing, multiple rail lines and exploding propane tanks.

They eventually used a high-capacity water jet from the fire engine to douse the area.

No one was hurt.

The cause is under investigation.

Portland Fire has responded to 2,000 fires in homeless communities just last year.

That’s more than 40% of all Portland fires.
