A parent is suing Portland Public Schools after their son was targeted in a racially motivated attack by other students in the hallway of West Sylvan Middle School in January.
KATU previously reported on the Jan. 18 incident, where several other students attempted to reenact the killing of George Floyd on the boy in the school's hallway.
The lawsuit alleges that PPS was negligent in its duties to protect the plaintiff as a student in its care, that the district knew, or should have known, about a history of racially based incidents at the school and failed to prevent future incidents, among other complaints.
The family is seeking at least $9 million in damages.
KATU has reached out to the district for a statement on the lawsuit.
Last month, the district said it stands firmly against any hateful acts in school and responded to this incident by following the district's protocol.
