Natural grandeur: Fostoria artist captures vibrancy in Ohio landscapes
ELMORE, Ohio — Landscape artist Jennifer Sowders' studio may not be fancy, but it is a home among the woodsy Ohio vistas she likes to paint. The name of her MONgallery and Art Studio in Fostoria has nothing to do with pretensions of the French but refers to the "Middle of Nowhere," as in rural America. “I can just walk out of my studio and nature is all around me,” said Sowders, a 1994 graduate of the Columbus College of Art and Design, who currently has a selection of works on view at the Schedel Arboretum and Gardens in Elmore, Ohio. Sowders' path during a career in art has been as meandering as a nature trail where she keeps discovering new aspects to herself.

Former Division II men's basketball standout Johnson bringing 'unique' offensive talents to BGSU
BOWLING GREEN — A quick look at recent Bowling Green State University men’s basketball transfer Marcus Johnson, and one would assume that he spends most of his time near the basket. Don’t be fooled. There’s a lot more to his game than what the 6-foot-7 forward’s physical appearance might present. “This is my 16th year of college coaching, I’ve never seen a player like him,” Wheeling men’s basketball coach Chris Richardson said of his former player. “ … I think all coaches want to play through the strengths of their players, especially on the offensive end, and we were fortunate with Marcus that those strengths were pretty unique for a player of his size.” Johnson, whose offensive abilities resemble more of a small guard than someone with his physique, will bring his talents from the NCAA Division II school to northwest Ohio. The Akron native, who won a pair of OHSAA state championships with St. Vincent-St. Mary High School, was one of the best shooters and scorers at the Division II level a year ago.
Man says thanks to Maumee emergency responders following heart attack
A Maumee man, with an entourage of family members, thanked the emergency responders who helped save his life after he suffered a heart attack this year. Rodney May, 66, visited the Maumee 1st Fire Station on Thursday with several dozen donuts, a small token of appreciation. First on the scene was Mr. May’s wife, Mary, who noticed Mr. May was having some discomfort in the early morning hours of March 20, but he shrugged it off to heartburn from the cheeseburgers he ate earlier in the evening. “I’m never making him another one [cheeseburger],” she said.
