Vero Beach broke a decades-old heat record and Fort Pierce tied one Friday as Treasure Coast residents sweltered under the hot sun despite 10 mph warm breezes. Vero Beach registered 96 degrees, breaking a record of 95 degrees on May 10 set in 1976. Fort Pierce also registered 96 degrees, tying its daily record set in 2008, said a meteorologist with the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Melbourne.
