Man on probation arrested following reckless chase in Martin County: Sheriff

A man from Port St. Lucie is behind bars after deputies say he led them on a dangerous chase in a stolen truck.

The Martin County Sheriff's Office (MCSO) said 33-year old Travis Wallen Shearer, from Port St. Lucie, stole a pick-up truck and traveled to Martin County. Shearer was on probation for fraud.

Detectives said they were already searching for the stolen pick-up truck with Arizona plates, when they encountered it at the intersection of Westmorland Boulevard and NW Federal Highway.

The sheriff's office said a detective initiated a traffic stop, but Shearer drove off, fleeing the scene. Detectives said Shearer recklessly sped off putting multiple motorists at risk.

There was a brief pursuit but for the safety of other motorists detectives ended the pursuit, luckily the sheriff's office said he crashed the truck shortly after.

Detectives said Shearer tried to flee the scene on foot, but was quickly out numbered and apprehended.

Shearer was charged with grand theft auto, resisting arrest, fleeing and eluding with no regard for others safety and violation of probation. He was taken to the Martin County Jail without bond.
