‘The Last of the Big Reds’: Port Huron High School class of 2023 celebrates graduation
They walked in, symbolic candlelight in hand, and left holding diplomas.
Roughly 224 seniors celebrated their commencement on Monday night at McMorran Arena as the 155th graduating class of Port Huron High School.
Referencing the district’s rebranding of mascots for several schools, Port Huron High Principal Mike Palmer called them “the last of the Big Reds.” But he emphasized that graduate’s pride in their school wouldn’t be defined by a name, nor memories by COVID-19.
“They also demonstrate the class and integrity that’ll show our future Redhawks how to carry on,” he said. “This class started their high school career as anyone (might in) ninth grade. And although they clearly did not have the traditional high school experience, these students will not be defined by a pandemic.”
Dr. Travis Washington, a Port Huron alumnus who delivered the commencement address, also touched upon the shift in identity but not in pride.
“I know there are many emotions in regard to the change,” he said. “However, this school is a pillar in our community and the pride also remains regardless of the name and the mascot. It truly is an honor to stand up here today.”
In his own remarks, Port Huron Schools Superintendent Theo Kerhoulas delved into reference of the rapid technological advances made in the lifetimes of graduates, joking he and their parents would be apprehensive of artificial intelligence, programs like ChatGPT, and the jobs such technology could replace.
“But you’re not scared of them. You embrace them. You see technology for what it is: A tool,” he said. “… Your ability to adapt, change, innovate and your Port Huron High School bring it on attitude is inspiring. You’re ready.”
Overall, Washington recalled the culmination of one’s high school years and what it mean in starting a new chapter, adding, “As I look out across the sea of red and white, I’m reminded and excited about the incredible journey that lies ahead for each and every one of you.”
Monday’s ceremony also featured a final performance with seniors and the high school band, as well as other performances from class singers and musicians.
Commencement events were to continue at 7 p.m. Tuesday at McMorran for Port Huron Northern High School’s class of 2023.
