Oakland County man could spend life in prison after allegedly shooting at his girlfriend

PONTIAC (WWJ) -- A Pontiac man faces possible life in prison after allegedly shooting at his girlfriend during a heated argument.

On Thursday, Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald charged 32-year-old James Lamar Middlebrooks with Assault with Intent to Murder, Felon in Possession of Firearm, Carrying Concealed Weapon, Domestic Violence Second Offense, and two counts of Felony Firearm.

“Every woman and person deserve to feel safe in their relationships and we will hold this individual accountable,” said McDonald, in a news release.

During an intense argument in Pontiac on Tuesday, May 30, Middlebrooks is accused of pulling out the handgun and pointing it at the 24-year-old victim. As the girlfriend ran away, the suspect allegedly shot at her, luckily missing the woman.

The victim got away uninjured.

Middlebrooks fled the scene and was later taken into custody by the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office Fugitive Apprehension Team (FAT).

Assault With Intent to Murder is a felony offense punishable by imprisonment for life or any number of years. Felon in Possession of Firearm is a felony offense punishable by 5 years imprisonment and/or up to a $5,000 fine. Carrying Concealed Weapon is a felony offense punishable by up to 5 years imprisonment and/or up to a $2,500 fine. Domestic Violence Second Offense is a misdemeanor offense punishable by 1 year of jail time and/or up to a $1,000 fine. Felony firearm carries a sentence of 2 years mandatory imprisonment.

The defendant is currently being held at the Oakland County Jail.
