Impact with Brightline train kills woman in Pompano Beach

POMPANO BEACH, Fla. – A Brightline train’s impact killed a woman on Friday in Pompano Beach, deputies said.

The crash occurred shortly before 7:30 a.m. Friday in the area of Northeast Sixth Street and North Dixie Highway.

“She was walking and she had her head down and she, like, looked up and then she just got hit by the train, and she flung up in the air and I saw her drop, and then everyone started running towards her,” witness Fatima Labeet said. “People were putting cones around her so no one would run over her, because people were still in their cars driving past like she wasn’t laying on the floor.”

Sky 10 was above the scene around 8 a.m. as a tarp covered the victim’s body. Authorities confirmed that Pompano Beach Fire Rescue officials pronounced the victim dead at the scene.

According to Broward Sheriff’s Office spokesman Carey Codd, detectives with BSO’s Traffic Homicide Unit are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash.

He said the northbound lanes of North Dixie Highway between Northeast Third Street and Northeast Sixth Street are shut down as the investigation continues.
