Pollock Pines addresses safety concerns following crash that sent 5 children to the hospital
Wednesday marks one week since five kids were struck by a van at a crosswalk in Pollock Pines. Three of those children suffered from major injuries. Four-year-old Juniper remains in the hospital fighting for her life.
As the community works to move forward from this tragic incident, many are asking what can be done so that this will never happen again.
"It's just scary; we pull out of here every day. There are just so many cars traveling down this road it could've happened to anybody. It's terrifying," said Nicole Hunsaker, who works in the area.
Pony Express Trail is a busy road in Pollock Pines, depending on the time of day.
"People just really speed down this road. I’ve lived on pony express trail on and off for 20 years and have never seen anyone slow down," said Penny Casio.
Monday, Placerville CHP held a town hall meeting to address the concerns of the community and provide an update on the ongoing investigation into the 21-year-old driver.
"We were able to have a civil dialogue, back and forth, a give and take to where everyone had an opportunity to be heard. We didn’t leave there until every hand had an opportunity to be raised," said CHP Lt. Rick Hatfield.
The sheriff's department, as well as CHP, have since increased their presence in the area.
"Within the last week, there is a focused enforcement effort in that particular area. We’ve also deployed our radar trailer," Hatfield said.
According to El Dorado County, a plan to improve that crosswalk was in place as early as 2019 but was met with some delays.
An update to the project was given at an El Dorado County Transportation Commission meeting in March, where they cited the Caldor Fire as one of the reasons the project has been delayed.
The project includes rapid flashers at existing crosswalks and enhances pedestrian walkways, crosswalk features and bicycle lanes.
The county says the project is planned to begin the bidding process next month, and construction will likely begin in the fall.
They're estimating to have it completed by the summer of next year.
