Ukiah Corner Gallery features guest artists from Lake County
The Corner Gallery is proud to host two first-time guest artists from Lake County in the front windows for the month of June. They are longtime friends Debbie Vogel and Judy Magoon. What the two women have in common, in addition to their longtime friendship, is their passion for pastels.
Boys and Girls Club of Ukiah Fund Drive reaches $24,385; goal is $65,000
The Ukiah Daily Journal’s Boys and Girls Club of Ukiah Spring Fund Drive is continuing, with a goal of $65,000 to support this vital community service. The latest donations include: Gaye Coffey $200, Jessica Kimball $200, Scott Miller & Christine Cary $100, Judith Popowski $100, Cottie Morrison $50, Judith Waterman $50, Savings Bank Employees $50 (The team of Jessica Diaz, Justin Tibbet, Mary Drinhouser, Michael DeJesus & Yessenia Manzanares for the SBMC March for a Cause event).

There was plenty of sunshine for Saturday’s Pastels on the Plaza in downtown Ukiah, which was originally planned for May but was rescheduled to June 1 due to rain last month. The event is a fundraiser for River Oak Charter School. This year’s theme was “Planting Connections.”

The community turned out Friday for the 2nd Annual Low Rider Festival, held in Alex Thomas Plaza and on the street in downtown Ukiah. The festival was presented by La Familia Market and South Valley’s Big Picture Program, and featured low rider vehicles, awards, live music, food and more.
Grace Hudson Museum in Ukiah opens for First Friday Art Walk
The Grace Hudson Museum will be open for First Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. on June 7. Round Valley resident Marjo Wilson will play live music with her Marjo Wilson Trio. Marjo has also organized a pop-up exhibition in the Public Room showcasing artwork by Round Valley RANCH artists. RANCH stands for Ranch Art Nurturing Cultural Heritage.
Kelley House Calendar: He painted the town
When Kevin Milligan first saw Mendocino in June of 1997, he was taken by surprise. He had never been farther north in California than San Francisco and had no idea a place as quaint and beautiful could be found there. A working landscape painter, he was engaged in producing a collection of lithographs on the California Coast, but he was most familiar with Big Sur and Carmel. It became immediately apparent to Milligan that Mendocino offered numerous subjects suited to his art. The day he arrived, he set up his easel in Evergreen Cemetery and looked toward the bay. “Headstones in the foreground and the ocean in the back, it was a timeless scene, and captured the essence of the town,” he wrote.
Jury fails to reach verdict in 2021 Hopkins Fire arson case
A jury did not reach a verdict in the trial of a 23-year-old Ukiah man accused of starting a 257-acre fire in 2021 that wiped out 30 homes in Mendocino County. A mistrial was declared Thursday after jurors deliberated about one day in Devin Lamar Johnson’s trial, court staff and records show.
