Have you ever been scammed from a tenancy contractor?
I have a house I am renting out, got tiles, carpet and blinds done. The countertop guy came, we worked out a price and he wanted $5K up front for the stone. Was supposed to be a 3-4 day job, he showed up 2 days late, ripped out all the counters then ghosted me. I worked really hard for that money and this guy just takes it. Yes it’s my fault for not getting a receipt or invoice but he said its gonna be emailed to me. What I don’t get is he has a business card with his name and business, fb page and his WhatsApp has his face. What can I do at this point?
How much would traffic be alleviated if tolls were free?
For example. I45 is a traffic jam every day. Hardy runs parallel to it and is almost never backed up. The city argues that opening the tolls would result in lost revenue. But how much potential revenue in the form of economic activity is lost from traffic jams?
One place name: where are the worst places to find parking in Houston and why?
It's less about WHERE and more about WHEN. One can find parking in hard-to-find areas at the right time and can potentially struggle in so-called 'easy' areas at the wrong. It's why, in Houston, the answer to, "how long does it take to drive from x to y?" is answered with "well, what time are you leaving?"
Houston Daily Discussion Thread - Fri, Sep 16
Talk about whatever's on your mind. Be excellent to each other. Just looked for apts and saw that a 400sf studio in my current building is going for $1925. I pay $1270 for a 480sf. Been here since 2011. It’s rent controlled. I guess I’m stuck here til I’m dead.
Where to find footage of old ('60s-'70s) Houston
I'm working on a project where I need to find fair-use footage of "old" Houston. Mainly 1970's footage of skyline views, people walking on the street, news coverage, etc. I started digging around in various library websites and of course Youtube, but I'm a little stuck! Any recommendations would be appreciated.
What is something in Houston you've put off doing for years, despite really wanting to do?
The question behind the question - I've lived here for fifteen years seen and done just about everything. I'm halfway through two weeks off, bored out of my mind and can't motivate myself to get out.
Is it me or are there suddenly a lot of El drivers who can't drive?
In the last six months or so I've lost count of the number of times I've been on the El (always the Red Line) and it feels like we're on a boat or something. The driver seems to be hitting the gas and then the brake over and over and unable to just keep a constant speed. There have been a couple times it's gotten so bad I've had to get off and wait for another train because I felt a little motion sick - and I don't get motion sick!
California becomes first state to offer free school meals. How can we make this happen in TX?
If you didn't want to go the route of elected officials then you could organize and circulate an initiative, get enough signatures, and get it on the ballot. Get people to vote directly.
Tabletop role-playing game shops really can't seem to remain open
i just noticed lotus gaming is closed south Houston-clear lake and Gerard's gaming went down during covid. also south houston - Webster area. i get these kinds of shops are a effort of love not necessarily profit but i've literally gone to both places several times tyring to get a dnd game night going with zero success. i've called, showed up in person, offered to dm for free, even posted on their facebook site. it is radio-silence. the question is where's the profit? well, face book ads/eyes maybe? dice, mini's, maps. tokens, food and drink?
Get Your Kids to School or Keep Your Job? Parents' Stress Over Transportation
Parents may be looking forward to their kids returning to school this fall — but they’re probably not so excited about the daily challenges around transportation. Not only do most kids need to be dropped off and picked up from school, they need to get to soccer games, tutoring lessons, play dates, and so on. For working parents who have their own schedules to maintain, all this juggling — and driving — can be hugely stressful.
This is Houston...we don't have real fall weather.
I've lived here my entire life, the acclimated thing is complete bs, it's hot as shit every summer. Even as a kid I remember how we all played video games indoors the entire summer until it was night time. It's been hot, its still hot, and it'll be hot again next year.
What are pros and cons of living in Houston?
The People! The diversity is wonderful. When my son was 12, I let him computer-research where we would eat that Friday night - with a caveat - we could not repeat a ethnic restaurant until we completed them all. It took over a year - every Friday night different. The people are so nice. if anyone says differently, you can bet they aren’t very nice themselves. Hurricane Harvey brought out the best in people helping their fellow Houstonians.
Kindergarten school staff ignore physical and verbal damage between students. How to deal with the negligence?
My nephew is in kindergarten and his hair has been cut by a classmate twice. The teacher & the principal have been ignoring my sister's calls and meeting requests. I feel like pulling him from school and letting this go will be the right thing, but the staff from this school are deliberately ignoring the parents. Other parents have told my sister that they have been ignoring physical and verbal damage between students.
What makes Houston traffic so bad?
If there's one thing Houston is known for, it’s definitely the traffic. As the fourth largest city in the United States, Houston is no stranger to traffic issues. You won’t believe how much time we actually spend in traffic. I've always wondered how Huston traffic is so terrible.
1st time apartment renter…is $300 too much for an electric bill in a 995 sqft unit?
I have no idea what’s normal and what’s not…I think the rate is 23¢/kwh. I know it’s summer and the AC is blasting, but is this normal for 1 person and occasional guest?? The secondary drain of our AC has been leaking which indicates a clog, but that was recently fixed. Would this affect its efficiency?
The best Barbecue places in Houston: do you agree with the list?
Internet imageMy parents are visiting this week and I been researching best Houston BBQ places. Truth, Killen’s, Corkscrew, Pit Room, and Gatlin’s are common recommendations. "All of them are top 5 percentile awesomest bbqs out there and unless you eat bbq all the time, probably cant tell the difference between those places except for the sauces", they say.
Where will the Fed's current round of interest rate hikes end? There are already investment banks seeing 4%
After Powell's speech in Jackson Hole, U.S. stocks have fallen for two consecutive trading days. The U.S. economy has not yet felt the pain of interest rate hikes, U.S. stocks have felt in advance. Now the market's main concern is where the Fed's rate hikes will end.
