Battlefield Memorial Gateway Groundbreaking in Plattsburgh

This week the Town of Plattsburgh and veterans’ groups break ground on a multi-million-dollar veterans memorial on the shore of Lake Champlain. After 6 years and delays due to the pandemic, the official groundbreaking for the Battlefield Memorial Gateway was held Memorial Day weekend in Plattsburgh. The first phase of construction is underway, there will be 6 in all, and the plans include overlooks of Lake Champlain, an outdoor amphitheater, a Purple Heart hiking trail dedicated to veterans, and the centerpiece of the project will be a memorial honoring veterans. At the docks, near-by on Lake Champlain, there will be easier access to the monuments and burial grounds on Crab Island. The Battlefield Memorial Gateway will cost about 6-million-dollars to build, and plans are to have all 6 phases completed in time for the nation’s 250th commemoration in 2026.
