Market hopes to purchase property as permanent home
The Columbia Falls Community Market will kick off its 10th season this Thursday starting at 5 p.m. at the grounds adjacent to St. Richard Catholic Church on Highway 2. The market will then run every Thursday night through the summer, with the last market Sept. 25. There’s a new excitement this year, as the market is hopeful to buy the 3.5-acre site from the Boys and Girls Club. Fundraising efforts will start in earnest in the coming weeks, noted market director Melissa Ellis. Donations can be made during market days in person, online via the markets website, or by contacting them directly at CFcommunitymarket@gmail.com. “This will give us a permanent home,” Ellis said. She noted the market is all about community and the eventual vision for the land is another park, like Marantette Park. The market already has several amenities, including a sand box for kids to play in and a large tent for musical acts and dancing. They’ve also added a new stage donated by SmartLam of Columbia Falls and have added another entrance at the southwest end of the property. Paveco donated materials for the sand box and Harris Hauling donated sand for the box. The market, like

Columbia Falls Trailer Park Evictions
Residents of the Lazy Day Trailer Park, off Hwy 2 at Meadow Lake Boulevard, have received eviction notices. Chris Peterson of the Hungry Horse News, reports the residents have some options. If they leave by July 18th, turning over the title to their trailer, they’ll receive $10,000. Wait until September 18th, $5,000, and after October 18th, nothing. Residents say it’ll cost upwards of $6,000 to have their trailers moved…if…they can find another trailer park taking new residents. The property owners, a real estate investment firm in Whitefish, hasn’t announced their future plans for the property. Last June, the 26-residents of the Spring Creek Mobile Home Park, on Cedar Drive off Hwy 35 in Evergreen, received eviction notices. In this instance, no buy-out alternatives were offered, so residents are on their own. The Whitefish Community Foundation created a loan fund, seeded with $45,000 towards the goal of $160,000 to help re-settle residents. As property values–and taxes increase, landowners are pressured to find greater sources of revenue that is available as a trailer park.

Consultant: City still has opportunity to address housing needs
Columbia Falls is at a key point in its housing situation, consultant Wendy Sullivan told the city planning commission last week. “You’re in a pre-emptive spot,” Sullivan said. The city is still poised to be able to mold its housing into forms that could support the middle class as well as market rate buyers, she noted. Sullivan and her staff recently completed a housing study for the city and surrounding area. Right now, there’s a surplus of homes priced above $700,000 that the bulk of Columbia Falls residents can’t afford on the wages they earn. Still, the economy in...

Potential buyers seek permit to operate historic Holland Lake Lodge
The Flathead National Forest is seeking public input on an operating permit for the Holland Lake Lodge, which is under contract with a potential new owner. The comment period comes two years after a previous sale was derailed by strong public backlash against a proposal to dramatically expand the resort south of Condon. The potential buyers, Eric Jacobsen and Thomas Knowles, have stated that they do not plan to expand the resort beyond its current footprint. The two men are part of a Utah-based investment firm called Gratitude Railroad. Jacobson grew up in Great Falls and spent time at...

If they wait until the Oct. 18 deadline, they...

Public hearing on housing study is Thursday night
The Columbia Falls Planning Commission will have a public hearing on a draft housing study Thursday at 6 p.m. at City Hall. After the hearing, the board will then consider whether to recommend the study to city council for full approval. The council and the planning commission already had a joint workshop to go over the study, though no public comment was taken in that session. The study exposed a large gap between income and what’s affordable for the bulk of Columbia Falls residents. “In the Columbia Falls area ... affordability is a problem for a broad range of...
