She worked at railway stations across central Montana and the Hi-Line, helping keep trains moving at a time when communication worked much differently.“There was no, telephones on the engine. So it was up to us girls to hand up these orders to the tradesmen so they know where to meet the other train. Well, well, the fellows were all got drafted in the Army or the service. So it was up to us women to work,” Stimac said.Blanche Garrett was also recognized at the luncheon. Montana is guaranteed to receive $89 million with the potential to receive $127 million for mental health services and after-school programming.

Guest opinion: Tram proposal should be rejected
Pursuit’s tram proposal should be summarily rejected by the Forest Service, as it was in 2023 because it is inconsistent with the Flathead Forest Plan and duplicates services already provided on public lands at Whitefish Mountain Resort. This tramway would further fragment wildlife habitat and their north-south travel, which is already fragmented by Highway 2, a railroad, power lines, and high human use of the Flathead River corridor. It will also destroy the views of that mountainside and river corridor. This is a rich-get-richer scheme and the greed is already apparent. What will come next, more trails to connect with other trails, downhill mountain bike trails, maybe a downhill ski run or two? Once these rich guys get started, they’ll be wanting more from public taxpayers and public lands in order to increase their activities and profits – just as happened with Whitefish Mountain Resort, Blacktail Mountain Ski Area and Holland Lake Lodge. I hope the Forest Service and Pursuit hear loud and clear from the public that people are fed up with seeing the Montana they love destroyed by big corporations wanting to cash in on public lands. As Forest Service screens tram proposal, opposition is quick to mount
The Forest Service will go through a screening process to determine whether a proposed tramway up Columbia Mountain by Pursuit Glacier Park Collection will move forward, Flathead National Forest Supervisor Anthony Botello said last week. The 91-acres in Hungry Horse where the proposed tramway’s base would be located is classified as 6-C under the 2018 Flathead National Forest plan. That calls for high intensity vegetative management with motorized use. Currently it a large, but thinned woods, with a paved multi-use path running along some of it. The land at the Northwest shoulder of Columbia Mountain where the tram would stop is classified as 5-B, which is backcountry motorized use year-round, but only on designated routes/areas. The upper end is also in inventoried roadless areas. Currently there are trails up Columbia Mountain that are used by motorcyclists, but primarily by people hiking, as the route to the top is a long and steep one. The screening process is not a public one and public comment will not be taken, Botello said. He said that would come later if the proposal clears the screening process. Part of that process is whether the proposal is compatible with the Forest Plan, but also whether
