More than 70 dogs removed from home of Massachusetts breeder

PLAINFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – More than 70 dogs were removed from a home of a Plainfield breeder.

According to the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources (MDAR), 76 dogs were removed from the home on Monday after the owner asked for assistance in downsizing. The owner was allowed to keep 10 of the dogs after they are spayed or neutered and vaccinated.

Over the last several weeks, the breeder of chihuahuas and other small breed dogs requested assistance from a local animal rescue organization after becoming overwhelmed. On Friday, an inspector was sent to the property with the Police Chief to assess the scope of the issue.

MDAR made arrangements with several licensed animal rescue organizations to ensure there were places for the animals to go. The dogs will be available for adoption after they are spayed or neutered and vaccinated.

Dakin Humane Society in Springfield took in 30 of the dogs Monday. Executive Director Megan Talbert told 22News the dogs are healthy and at this time none need to be put down. However, the home was no longer a livable situation.

“The conditions were not how we’d like to see one of our loved ones live and we’re glad this homeowner is getting the help she needs,” said Talbert.

When it comes to finding new homes for these dogs, they’ll have to learn how to socialize with other humans because they haven’t been out of the home much.

“Hoarding of all kinds including hoarding of animals is a mental illness. We need to be compassionate and understanding for people who are going through these things and offer the help to not only take care of the animals but also help her rebuild,” said Talbert.

The dogs will be up for adoption on a rolling basis, Dakin plans to put up a special link for people interested in adopting on their website at a later time.
