Judge drops all charges against man arrested in connection with Caldor Fire
All charges have been dropped against a Folsom man who was arrested in connection with the 2021 Caldor Fire. Travis Shane Smith, 32, and his father David Scott Smith, 66, were arrested and charged with reckless arson in December 2021, months after the start of the wildfire. Both pleaded not guilty to the charges. In January, a judge ruled that there was “not sufficient evidence” to take the case to trial.

Granite Bay residents continue to oppose Placer County rezoning for low-income housing
GRANITE BAY, Calif. — In March, Placer County residents made it clear they don't want low-income housing in their backyards. Their fight continues this week. Placer County officials are looking for 19 more properties to rezone for high-density, low-income housing as part of its Housing Needs Rezone Program. The county must find more places for this kind of housing to keep local control of its land and have access to grant funding for local programs and initiatives.
El Dorado County teenager hit by truck during school hours
EL DORADO COUNTY – A teenager was hit by a truck earlier this week in the middle of the school day near an elementary school and a high school.According to the California Highway Patrol spokesperson Officer Andrew Brown, it happened Tuesday around 11:30 a.m. near the intersection of Pleasant Valley and Oak Dell Road.Brown said a 17-year-old driving a Dodge Ram hit a 17-year-old pedestrian."The pedestrian suffered major injuries, or suspected major injuries, and was transported to a local hospital via helicopter," Brown said.It happened near Charles Brown Elementary School and Union Mine High School. Grow For It! Final Master Gardener plant sale of the season
Join the University of California Cooperative Extension Master Gardeners of El Dorado County for the final plant sale of 2024 on Saturday, April 27. Landscape plants, including perennials, California native plants, trees and shrubs, ground covers, ornamental grasses, seeds and succulents, will be featured at this sale, which will take place at Sherwood Demonstration Garden, located behind the Folsom Lake College El Dorado Center at 6699 Campus Drive in Placerville. Sale hours will run 8 a.m. to noon (rain or shine), with parking adjacent to the garden. Consider bringing your own carryout boxes and carts to the event; they can be in short supply during the sale. Please note that some edible plants — vegetables, herbs and fruits — will also be sold on this date.
Canyons 100K course gets flipped
This year’s Canyons Endurance Run by UTMB will offer a unique course for the 100 mile and 100K, with both races starting at China Wall and finishing in Auburn. While the 100-mile course will be a unique trek that has never been run at The Canyons, the 100K course will provide a different challenge for runners. With a start at China Wall, the 100K course will be nearly the same as the 2022 run but in reverse. The only difference between the courses is that this year’s run will feature an added descent and climb from Devil’s Thumb to Swinging Bridge.
