Placer's Staton FVL defensive MVP, Hillmen land three on all-league first team
Placer High School’s Cam Staton was named defensive MVP of the Foothill Valley League for the 2023 baseball season. Staton was one of the most dominant pitchers in the Sac-Joaquin Section, as his 109 strikeouts against 39 walks helped lead the Hillmen to a Sac-Joaquin Section Division IV semifinal berth.
NARC Heads To Placerville With $5,000 Prize On The Line
PLACERVILLE, Calif. — Action and tradition will meet each other on Saturday, June 3, when the NARC 410 Sprint Car Series returns to Placerville Speedway. A $5,000 payday will go to the driver who can slay the field of the 32nd Annual Dave Bradway Jr. Memorial. This will be the only time the series heads to ‘Little Knoxville On The Hill’ this season.

Athlete of the Week: Jack Ghufran leads Grizzlies baseball to back-to-back section titles
The Granite Bay High baseball team won its third section title in school history with a 3-0 win over Rio Americano High at Sacramento City College last Thursday. The Grizzlies were led by their starting pitcher and junior Jack Ghufran, who also started the section title game in 2022 when the Grizzlies won 4-2. Ghufran pitched a complete game shutout last Thursday with 10 strikeouts on 100 total pitches. Ghufran is 4-4 on the season with a 3.07 earned run average and 70 strikeouts. His coach, Pat Esposito, explained what makes Ghufran a special player.

A team of talented gymnasts from Cameron Park took multiple spots on the podium at the National Gymnastics Association Regional Championships. Competitors hailing from the western United States from Hawaii to Wyoming massed in Layton, Utah, for the championship competition May 12-14. Cameron Park’s Tumble Time gym brought a crew of 7- to 15-year-olds to regionals setting scores many other teams were unable to match. When the chalk had settled at the end of the weekend, the Tumble Time team had been crowned team champions in Level 2 and had secured 38 qualifications to compete at the national competition in New Orleans this June.

Granite Bay Rugby wins NorCal championship, prepares to defend national title
Granite Bay Rugby’s motto this season has been “be comfortable being uncomfortable” and nothing defines that more than the last week for the varsity boys’ team. On April 30, Granite Bay’s Tyson Wasser suffered a massive stroke during a match, due to a blood clot in his neck. Wasser spent the next four days in the ICU before being transferred to Kaiser Medical Center in Vallejo for rehab where he remains today.
