The Pittsburgh Steelers brought in both Russell Wilson and Justin Fields this offseason which complicated their quarterback room just a bit. But on Saturday, Tomlin offered some insight into who could have the edge in the potential battle for the starting job.

At this stage of both Fields’ and Wilson’s career, the two bring two very different skill sets to the table. With Fields, you have a dynamic playmaker who can truly change an offense with his scrambling ability. And with Wilson, you have a seasoned veteran who is capable of managing each and every game to put you in a situation to win.

Both have their positive factors as the Steelers’ potential starter. But according to Tomlin, it will be Wilson who will likely get the first crack at starting.

“In the early stages of team development, Russell (Wilson) is in pole position,” said Tomlin during a conversation with ESPN’s Rece Davis during the Day 3 broadcast of the 2024 NFL Draft. “And I think his collective body of work merits that. But we are excited to have Justin (Fields) as well. And obviously during the course of team development, training camp, and the preseason, he’ll be given an opportunity to compete.”

Given Wilson’s obvious high-level experience edge over Fields, this was always the expected course for the Steelers in the eyes of most.

This means that Fields will likely need to make a statement in order to get the starting job over Wilson unless a potential injury calls him into action.

Either way, the Steelers should certainly have a far more intriguing quarterback situation than they had this past season.
