Wednesday is Global Running Day, a day that encourages people to get out and go for a run worldwide.

Global Running Day’s beginning

The holiday began in the United States as National Running Day in 2009. It continues to promote being physically active and the benefits of running for exercise and fun.

According to the World Health Organization more than a quarter of the adult population aren’t getting enough physical activity.

WHO also reports that maintaining an exercise routine can have a significant influence on a persons physical health. Exercise can improve muscular and cardio-respiratory fitness, bone and functional health. It can also reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes and various types of cancer and depression.

Today, participants can register through the Global Running Day site to share their runs and be a part of the day. Other fitness companies like Lululemon, Strava and Nike are hosting events to promoting the day.

Tom Cruise also recognized the day with a tweet, nodding to his “Mission Impossible” character that frequently runs long distances when he’s out in the field.
