Neighbors come together to support Perry South family still reeling from devastating house fire

PITTSBURGH — The flames are gone but the painstaking process to assess the damage is just beginning for a Perry South family.

An early morning fire swept through Sydnee Napper’s home Friday on Marshall Avenue in Perry South.

Napper is still processing it all.

“I am waiting to see how much damage was done to the other side of the house...but we’ll figure it out,” said Napper.

She is so grateful for her neighbors. One called 911 and made sure her two children and dogs got out safely. This Memorial Day holiday, another neighbor is offering emotional support.

“We have been able to extend ourselves by allowing family members to come and rest, take care of her dogs, and whatever else is needed at the time,” said neighbor, Loleda Moman.

Moman said it’s the kind of community that looks out for one another. They share all of life’s triumphs and tragedies. They watched their kids grow up together and have each other’s backs.

This situation has definitely made Moman appreciate her close-knit community even more.

“When I first moved into the community, we were very intentional about introducing ourselves. Our children are a part of that. It’s not individual, it’s family,” said Moman.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Fire crews focused their attention on the second-floor front bedroom. In the meantime, local agencies found temporary shelter for the family. Neighbors are watching their two beloved dogs. Moman says they’ll be there for the Napper family offering them space when they need it and help to bounce back.
