Bikers enjoy roads without vehicles during Open Streets PGH

PITTSBURGH — About four miles across North Shore, Downtown and on the South Side were closed to vehicle traffic Sunday because of an event hosted by BikePGH.

The organization hosts the “Open Streets” event to give people in the city an opportunity to bike or simply walk freely without having to worry about competing with vehicles on the road.

Bikers were able to enjoy the open roads from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“People love the event. We’ve had record numbers these past couple of years, especially after the pandemic. People have really come back and enjoying being part of the event,” said Eric Boerer, advocacy director with BikePGH.

A Kids Hub was stationed on North Shore Drive and Art Rooney Avenue where children could learn how to ride bikes. Visitors could also bike to Market Square to learn more about health and wellness or to East Carson Street to enjoy the Arts and Culture Hub.

The Open Streets will return in June and July on the last Sunday of each month.
