Once on the scene, they found a man with an apparent gunshot wound to the head. The victim was transported to a local hospital in critical condition, police said.

Alexander Yerkey, 26, of Bethel Park, died at the hospital from his injuries, authorities said. In a statement, Mayor Ed Gainey said Yerkey worked for the Department of Mobility and Infrastructure as an intern and a consultant and said his death was a "senseless act of gun violence."

"Alex was a kind, gentle, and thoughtful person who was passionate about making Pittsburgh a better place for everyone," Gainey said.

"He left a lasting impression during his time as both an intern and a consultant for the Department of Mobility and Infrastructure, and today we are grieving this loss while also feeling gratitude for having known him. The city is working to provide help and support to our colleagues in DOMI as they process this tragic loss of life."

The suspect, identified by investigators as Lukas Kislak, is in police custody. He was arrested on Penn Avenue. Police said they also found a gun during his arrest.
